Three Killed in Fall Accident on Bechtel Port Arthur LNG Project
Bechtel has suspended all work on its Port Arthur LNG export terminal project after three workers were killed in a fall accident on April 29 in Sabine Pass, Texas.
Investigating officials reported that the workers fell an estimated 65 to 85 feet after “some type of mishap” caused a layer of scaffolding connected to a concrete tank to fail, sending several workers over the edge. The victims were identified as Felix Jose Lopez, 42; Felipe Mendez, 25; and Reginald Magee, 41. Lopez and Mendez were pronounced dead at the scene. Magee was taken to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Two other workers involved in the accident were treated for their injuries and are expected to make a full recovery, according to investigating police.
“Not all employees landed on the ground. Two of them were able to stay up, but all sustained injuries,” said Capt. Crystal Holmes of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
In a statement sent to ENR, Bechtel said all work on the site was stopped immediately following the incident and a work stoppage will remain in place as officials investigate the cause of the incident.
“We have sent all craft professionals home early to be with their families during this difficult time. We are cooperating fully with local authorities as investigations continue and have launched our own internal review. Supporting those impacted and ensuring site safety remain our top priorities,” the company said.
Holmes added that Jefferson County and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have opened an investigation into the incident and will both release findings once the investigation is complete.
“It’s a tragedy for the families and for those involved, and not just the victims, but for employees that were out here and family that were out here,” said Holmes.
Bechtel added, “Our thoughts are with the families and our colleagues affected by this tragic incident.”
Bechtel is the main contractor on the $13-billion project under its EPC agreement with San Diego-based Sempra Infrastructure. The project, which will enable export of natural gas, includes natural gas liquefaction trains, LNG storage tanks and marine facilities.
In a statement, Sempra added, “Our condolences go out to the families of those who lost their lives as well as those who are injured.”
Bechtel ranked No. 14 on ENR’s 2025 Top 500 Design Firms list.
