Structure Tone Completes LEGO Group’s New US Headquarters

The world’s largest toy company opened its new U.S. hub in Boston on May 15, marking the beginning of the end to its more-than-50-year tenure at its former Connecticut headquarters.

While the LEGO Group officially opened its 157,000-sq-ft office space in Boston’s Back Bay on May 15, its relocation from Enfield, Conn., won’t be complete until the end of next year.

The six-floor office fit out built by Structure Tone and designed by BDG is in the Lyrik at 1001 Boylston St., a 20-story office building completed last year. The tower is part of a larger air rights development over the Massachusetts Turnpike that includes a hotel and a Rivian auto showroom.

“As you can imagine, building a space for a company like the LEGO Group required a lot of creativity,” Ryan Megenedy, senior account executive at Structure Tone, said in an email to ENR. “Many elements of the design echo the ‘studs’ on the iconic LEGO brick, which means we were working with a lot of curves and radiuses. We also built four central staircases across five floors that enabled us to incorporate lots of fun and playful LEGO models throughout the space. We’re incredibly proud of how it turned out.”

The LEED Gold- and WELL Gold-certified office space includes sky terraces, 90-plus meeting spaces, more than 660 workstations, a gym, parents’ rooms and flexible wellness areas for employees.

“This fantastic new LEGO workspace is an important part of our U.S. investment strategy, fast becoming a talent magnet in this important market,” Niels B. Christiansen, LEGO Group chief executive said in a statement. “The Boston Hub will open up new ways for LEGO colleagues to create, connect and grow as we continue our mission to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow across the U.S.”

The Danish toymaker is also building a $1-billion factory and regional distribution center in Virginia that is expected to open in 2027. Last year LEGO selected Gray|Hourigan, a joint venture of Gray Inc. and Richmond, Va.-based Hourigan, as general contractor for the Virginia project.

The Boston headquarters project team also included: Samuels & Associates, project owner; Syska Hennessy, MEP design and LEED; Lux Collaborative, lighting design consultant; Lumenwerx, lighting installation; CDA, audio/visual design consultant; McCann, audio/visual installation; and Creatacor, exhibit fabricators.
