Volkert I35

Volkert was the prime engineering firm for the $107-million IH-35 at SH 123 intersection reconstruction in San Marcos, Texas, part of the major I-35 reconstruction program which includes the under-construction $607-million I-35 CAPEX North project and $3-billion I-35 CAPEX Central projects, both projects for which Volkert is prime design firm.

A century in business isn’t the only thing Volkert will have to celebrate in 2025, as ENR’s editorial team has named the Mobile, Ala.-based firm the ENR Texas & Louisiana Design Firm of the Year.

Employee-owned Volkert grew revenues across the board last year, now with around 1,500 employees across 60 offices in 25 states. One of those employees, Texas-based Trevor Reed, vice president and director of engineering, was named to ENR Texas & Southeast’s inaugural class of Top Young Pros in 2024.

The firm also took home a Regional Best Project award from ENR Texas & Louisiana in 2024, for the Nashville Avenue Wharf project, which won Best Project in the Airport/Transit category.

Volkert continues work on major regional projects, including the Central and North sections of the IH-35 Capital Express project in Austin, Texas, delivering engineering design services for the project, which aims to enhance safety, mobility and connectivity in Downtown Austin. In San Marcos, Texas, Volkert designed the recently-completed $107-million IH-35 interchange and is the prime design firm for the $831-million reconstruction of two major interchanges in Beaumont, Texas.

The firm is making waves in the community, too. Late last year, the firm got its name on a 600-gallon aquarium at the University of South Alabama in its hometown, after a gift of $150,000 split between USA’s Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences and its College of Engineering.
