Granite Construction Wins $111M Utah Interstate Rehab Contract



Granite Construction said it has won a $111 million contract from the Utah Dept. of Transportation to rehabilitate the Interstate 215 corridor from State Route 201 to North Temple, a company spokesman has confirmed. 

Crews will rubblize three miles of existing Portland cement concrete pavement on I‑215 and overlay it with 175,000 tons of highly modified hot‑mix asphalt. Following the rehabilitation, the Watsonville, Calif. contractor will cap the work with a 6-inch overlay of asphalt that meets state DOT compaction and rut-resistance standards.  

The spokesman said all structure and pavement work will be self‑performed by Granite, with AAA Barricade handling traffic control.

Environmental and permitting approvals – including water quality, stormwater and noise permits – were secured in advance under UDOT’s terms, he added.

Included in the upgrades is stormwater infrastructure work, which involves 22,000 linear feet of new pipe. Additionally, 22 bridges will undergo deck replacement, hydro-demolition, pothole patching and structural repairs.

To maintain mobility, Granite and AAA Barricade will shift I‑215 traffic to one side of the freeway, preserving three lanes in each direction throughout the two‑year schedule, with most closures limited to overnight and weekend windows. Ramps to SR 201, I‑80 and California Avenue remain open under intermittent closures, and night‑work periods will coincide with bridge operations and paving activities, the company said.

Granite’s Walker Hot Plant will supply the highly modified hot‑mix asphalt for the mainline overlay, plus 5,000 tons of temporary asphalt for ramp closures.

The spokesman said he anticipates an Aug. 1 start, with interim bridge‑deck and ramp reopening milestones to be determined.

The $190 million overall project budget, a blend of state and federal funds, supports measures such as ramp-metering installation at California Avenue to extend pavement life to 15 years.

“Granite’s paving and structure crews will remain busy through the winter and into fall 2026,” Vice President Jason Klaumann said in a statement

Construction is expected to wrap by November 2026.
