The firm that ranked No. 1 in retail construction on last year’s ENR New York Top Contractor survey is now ENR New York’s Contractor of the Year. Schimenti Construction Co. will be recognized as such in the July print issue of ENR East, which will also include the ENR East Top Contractor rankings.
The ENR East ranking of contractors includes firms doing business in Connecticut, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia. Rankings are based on total regional revenue of design services of participating companies, also including breakouts by state revenue and various design specialties and disciplines, as applicable.
The new ranking follows the 2025 consolidation of ENR regional editions into five new regions to reflects an ongoing commitment to deliver the most relevant and timely coverage to readers, in alignment with the evolving landscape of the construction industry. Regional surveys will follow these new boundaries going forward. You can read more about the regional consolidation here.
The Contractor of the Year demonstrates success in the region from a growth and revenue standpoint as well as innovation, creativity and a commitment to giving back to its community.
Manhattan-based Schimenti posted $164 million in revenue in the retail sector on last year’s ENR New York Top Contractor ranking, ahead of much larger firms. It attributes its recent success to the completion of 90-plus projects, including eight flagship builds and its first $100 million project—for French retailer Printemps.
In addition to retail, the firm is recognized for its work across multiple sectors, especially entertainment and hospitality, where it ranked No. 2 and No. 4 in ENR New York’s Top 5 last year. The firm says these sectors continue to be a primary focus for Schimenti, “and its ability to create detailed, design-driven spaces is a key factor in its ongoing success.”
The firm also has a strong safety culture with an Experience Modification Rate (EMR) of 0.72. The introduction of the firm’s Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP) in 2022 has further reinforced its safety culture. The firm says the ESOP gives each employee a vested interest in the firm’s collective success.
Some of the organizations the firm supports include PAVE Global, which focuses on education and industry mentorship; and the James Lenox House Association, which provides affordable housing for seniors. Schimenti is also involved with several professional organizations that promote broader community impact and reflect its values, including the Build Out Alliance, Professional Women in Construction (PWC), and the ACE Mentor Program,
The firm’s college summer internship program provides students with hands-on experience across various departments, helping them build practical skills, develop industry knowledge, and explore different paths within the construction realm.
Some of Schimenti’s top projects include:
-
Printemps New York
Located at One Wall Street, the store marks the Parisian retailer’s U.S. debut and features a 55,000-sq-ft flagship. Designed by Laura Gonzalez, the store seamlessly blends heritage and innovation with sculptural lighting, hand-painted tiles, warm wood parquet, and imported stonework. A standout feature is the restored landmarked Red Room, which preserves its original mosaics and soaring 33-ft ceilings, creating an immersive, multi-sensory environment. The Printemps buildout was a 26-month project marked by close coordination, global sourcing, and precision craftsmanship. Preconstruction began in December 2022, followed by an early structural phase. Schimenti turned over the white box in September 2024, with final installation completed in February 2025 ahead of the March public opening. Delivered as a turnkey project, the scope extended well beyond typical construction to include lighting, audiovisual systems, custom furniture, artwork, and high-end finishes. -
SKIMS NYC
The flagship store brings the brand’s minimalist identity to life through carefully sculpted architecture and a cohesive material palette. Rounded transitions, Corian display fixtures, Ultrasuede walls, and custom lightbox fitting rooms create a clean, tonal atmosphere. Integrated digital touchpoints and a 15-ft centerpiece sculpture by Vanessa Beecroft further enhance the brand’s connection to its online roots. Budget considerations and late design documentation delayed the start while existing building infrastructure created complications for the MEP systems. A key hurdle was reworking the HVAC design to align with site conditions, which required close coordination between Schimenti, the owner, and trade partners. The Schimenti team led a series of design-build efforts, involving frequent consultations and an accelerated schedule with overtime to meet the targeted holiday opening.
Last year, Schimenti ranked No. 26 on the ENR New York Top Contractor survey with $294.25 million in revenue.
